Bibliography

Here is the list of books I use regularly to build this site and its nomenclature. I also use, for the nomenclature, the catalogues provided by various camellias nurseries. This allows me to give the correct names and characteristics to the camellias.

Reference nomenclatures

By the reliability of the information they contain, these books are essential to any camellia lover and are the ones I use the most in my referencing work.

Thomas J. Savige " The international Camellia Register". Fine Arts Press, Sydney, Australia. 
1993 Edition in two volumes.

This book presents 30.000 camellias, in the most precise manner, with a mountain of references. Their is a small number of photographs (only in introduction). The remainder is the long list of all the camellias indexed. It is a true encyclopaedia, the main reference for my work. It is an immense work.

It is a very rare book (published in 1.500 specimens), I found it on abebooks.com.
Thomas J. Savige " The international Camellia Register, Supplement to volumes one and two". Fine Arts Press, Sydney, Australia. 

1997 edition. It gathers all the corrections of the two preceding volumes and references new cultivars created between 1990 and 1995. It is as rare as the first two volumes, I found it on abebooks.fr.
Neville Haydon " The international Camellia Register, Second supplement 1990-2010". Fine Arts Press, Sydney, Australia. 

2011 edition. It contains the updates and new obtentions from 1990 to 2010. The information of pages 287 to 377 of the first supplement are re-included.

Jacques Soignon, René Mahuas "1001 Camellias, à Nantes et dans toute la Bretagne". Editions d'Orbestier. 2018

French book with English translation. A very complete nomenclature of camellias coming from Nantes and Brittany. Finally a reference book written in French, a long team work for the verification and authentication of the camellias presented in the book..
Takasi Tuyama "Camellias of Japan". Takeda Science Foundation, Osaka, Japan. 1968

Edition in English and Japanese. Book of two volumes, one describing 420 camellias and the other illustrating them by photographs. Register reference book.

This book illustrates the collection of a group of particular camellias from Iyo, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. It is a photographic nomenclature with names in Latin characters.
Stirling Macoboy "The Illustrated Encyclopédia of the Camellias". Timber Press. Portland. Oregon.(livre en anglais)

It is a very complete book (one thousand cultivars). It was my first reference and I often refer to it. The book and the illustrations are splendid.

This book was used as the basis for the previous one. There are less photographs, but one finds old cultivars description, which do not appear any more in the encyclopaedia above.

A practical dictionary, easy to consult that I found in French version. I find there camellias which are not referred in the preceding work.

Jennifer Trehane "Camellias. The complète guide to their cultivation and use". Timber Press. Portland. Oregon (livre en anglais).
Very complete book on the camellias culture.  It contains invaluable information. It is rather academic but contains some interesting photographs. It is extremely famous. It is undoubtedly for that reason that it is so hard to find.

More than a guide, an encyclopedia. It reference 600 camellias with photos and advises for culture (care, propagation, ...). Published in November 2007.

Book in English and Chinese. A nomenclature dedicated to the species, with description, classification and pictures. It is very useful to identify some camellias species. Bought on ebay.

Photos and descriptions of 700 cultivars. Book in Chinese with camellia names in Latin.
Xu Biyu and Lin Tianfei et al" Sasanqua (Cha Mei)". China Press. 2007
Book in Chinese (latin character for names). This book is a treatise on camellia Sasanqua first published in China. It contains a description of 122 Sasanqua cultivars and more than 260 pictures. Book bought on Abebooks.com.

Livre en italien et en anglais. After many long years of work, the author tells the story of Higos and classify them in a nomenclature. The photos are valuable for their identification. Bought on ebay.
Andrea Corneo & Dora Remotti "Camelie Dell Ottocento Nel Verbano". Regione Piemonte. 2000
Book in Italian. It traces the history of the camellia in Italy. Then he presents an accurate and very detailed description of 100 old cultivars grown in the Verbano region (Italian province of Piedmont). Each camellia is compared, where possible, with original documents, to help authentication.

Nomenclatures secondaires

Jim Rolfe et Yvonne Cave "Camellias. A practical gardening guide". Timber Press. Portland. Oregon.
It is the first book I found about camellia culture. In addition to the text and councils, it contains splendid photographs. This one is more accessible than the precedent. It is an excellent synthesis on the subject.

William L. Ackerman "Growing Camellias in Cold Climates". Noble House.
A very interesting technical book which makes a synthesis of research on the camellia resistance to cold. It propose farming techniques and all the frost-resistant cultivars.

Luc Dhaeze-Van Ryssel et René De Herdt "De camellia. Een'aristocratishe roos'". VIAT zvw.
The history of camellia in Belgium through its breeders. Among this, their is a complete nomenclature of Belgium cultivars. A very beautiful book with great pictures. Published in may 2008 (book in flamish), among a very nice exposition on the subject at the MIAT of Gent. A very useful book to identify the cultivars.

Dr Gerd Kierfeld "Gärtnern mit Kamelien". Kaleidoskop Buch 2008
Book in German, written by an Camellia lover.He describes in detail his collection, with description and photo for every camellia. He share his experience regarding its culture. For sale on the on-line bookshops.
Helga et Klaus Urban "La beauté des Camellias". Ulmer.
It is the first french book which I bought on the camellias. It is written by German people, impassioned by the subject. It is easy to read and gives a substantial list of cultivars.

Jorge Garrido "Camélias... outros olhares". Agro Manual. 2011
Book in Portuguese. Camellia history, culture, relation with Arts. Camellia presence in Portugal and in some other countries. Finally, photographic nomenclature of an hundred Portuguese cultivars. Sold by correspondence at the editor.

2021 publication in Portuguese. This book describes the camellias originating from Porto, about 355 camellias obtained in the region of Porto out of the 400 Portuguese camellias registered. At the end of the book, very documented, there is a photographic nomenclature of some Portuguese camellias.

This book (in french) describes in detail the camellia history. It treats also its culture. It brings testimonys of amateurs and professionals. It contains descriptions and photographs to help you in your choice.

Ghislaine de Préaulx Carlo "Le monde des Camellias". Editions du Rouergue.
Another French book. It shows big subjects, which is less common.

A french book very estimated by camellia lovers. A reference book in the camellia history. An essay on its culture, description and classification. Three editions exist, this one is the oldest.
