Visit - Tsubaki-hana Garden - Izu-Ôshima - Japan

Globe

We begin our second trip to Japan in 2025, by visiting the island of Izu-Oshima, two hours by Jetfoil from Tokyo. This is the first garden we discover. We are at the Tsubaki-hana Garden, the private property of Mr. Takashi Yamashita, who designed and maintains it. This park covers 17.5 hectares and, at the end of the visit, on a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, we were not so lucky on the day of our visit.
The collection of camellias is very rich; in addition to the camellias born in Izu-Oshima, the Japanese camellias, there are also camellias better known in Europe, such as 'Ville de Nantes' and its descendants. It should be added that the camellias in this garden bloom early. We visited Izu-Oshima at the very beginning of March.

We were greeted by Mr. Yamashita and his assistant, with whom we discussed our work. We began the tour. Everything was well-organized, well-kept, and very accessible. We rediscovered the charm of Japanese gardens that we had so appreciated during our first trip in 2015.

We reach the path of fallen camellias from C. rosaeflora.

We continue our stroll through another part of the garden. This large avenue is lined with camellias and hydrangeas, the collection of which is equally remarkable.

'Somefude' was born in Izu-Oshima.

a Wabisuke also born in Izu-Oshima. We chose it to be the 2900th camellia of the nomenclature.

This is where you can see Mount Fuji on a clear day.

We are nearing the end of the tour. We return to reception and say goodbye to Mr. Yamashita and his assistant.
